The Carbon Toolkit
A practical, facility‑level toolkit that enables scalable brands’ Scope 3 supplier engagement from baseline to targets to action.
The Carbon Toolkit helps brands and manufacturers turn Scope 3 ambition into facility‑level decarbonization plans by standardizing data, enabling credible target‑setting, and translating site insights into actionable carbon reduction projects.
What is the Carbon Toolkit?
The Carbon Toolkit is an implementation-focused, industry-available solution developed and maintained by RESET Carbon to help companies and their suppliers move from high-level decarbonization commitments to measurable, site-level progress across complex value chains. It combines standardized methodologies, Excel-based tools, and technical guidance to support consistent data collection, credible target‑setting, and the identification and planning of actionable carbon reduction opportunities at facility level.
Why it works for Scope 3 supplier engagement
The Carbon Toolkit is designed for scale and practicality, helping sustainability and sourcing teams shift from reporting‑only cycles to facility‑level decarbonization execution. It creates a shared structure for suppliers and brands to discuss carbon baselines, reduction levers, project economics, and progress—reducing friction and improving consistency across supplier engagement programs.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE
For most sectors, the majority of emissions sit outside direct operations, embedded in Scope 3 supply chains. While corporate ambition has accelerated through net‑zero commitments, Science Based Targets, and disclosure expectations, implementation often stalls when suppliers face fragmented data requests, overlapping platforms, and limited technical capacity.
The Carbon Toolkit was developed to close this ambition–implementation gap by providing a consistent, supplier‑centric foundation that:
- Translates corporate Scope 3 goals into facility‑level decarbonization targets and action plans
- Reduces duplication and complexity in supplier data collection
- Builds supplier capability with structured guidance and standardized tools
- Enables brands to track progress and prioritize investments across their supplier engagement program
The Carbon Toolkit was initially developed as part of the Carbon Leadership Program (CLP) in collaboration with a lead brand, C&A, on the basis that it would be made freely available to the industry.
RESET Carbon was commissioned by the Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) to develop and maintain the Carbon Toolkit, with Aii retaining ownership of the intellectual property. This governance model ensures the Toolkit remains an industry-oriented resource, while benefiting from ongoing technical development, maintenance, and deployment support by RESET Carbon.

WHAT THE CARBON TOOLKIT COVERS
The Carbon Toolkit supports the full site-level decarbonization journey combining data, analysis, and action planning in a single framework:
1) Baseline & emissions tracking (carbon and water)
Standardized baseline reporting creates a clear view of facility emissions trends and supports base-year selection for carbon and water.
2) Action planning & abatement options
Facilities can document reduction opportunities and build a practical implementation plan grounded in site realities, including energy efficiency measures, fuel switching, and renewable energy pathways.
3) Target setting & scenario linkage
A target calculator connects the action plan to pragmatic facility‑level reduction targets, helping align site pathways with broader Scope 3 strategies.
4) Reporting & KPI measurement
Standardized reporting supports monitoring of key KPIs, including absolute emissions, emissions intensity, projects implemented, and progress against targets—enabling year-on-year tracking and stronger supplier engagement governance.

ADOPTION AND USE AT SCALE
The Carbon Toolkit has been adopted across multiple industries as part of RESET Carbon’s supplier engagement and supply chain decarbonization programs, supporting facility‑level decarbonization at scale:
In the apparel & footwear sector, the Toolkit is a core component of the CLP, underpinning a standardized approach to facility‑level baselining, target setting, and action planning across global manufacturing networks. The methodology has been followed by more than 25 brands and over 500 sites, demonstrating broad adoption of facility‑level decarbonization practices enabled by standardized tools such as the Carbon Toolkit.
Beyond apparel, the Carbon Toolkit has also been applied in consumer goods & retail supply chains, supporting brands with diverse sourcing footprints to engage priority suppliers on Scope 3 emissions through consistent data collection, actionable roadmaps, and progress tracking.
The same facility‑level framework has been extended to electronics, semiconductors & technology value chains, where complex manufacturing processes and energy‑intensive operations require robust site‑specific data and technically grounded decarbonization pathways.
