About the Client
Vita Coco is a is a family of brands on a mission to reimagine what’s possible when brands deliver healthy, nutritious, and great-tasting products that are better for consumers and better for the world. They focus on protecting natural resources, building thriving communities, and championing health and wellness.
The Challenge
The client sought to understand the gate-to-gate carbon footprint and water intensity of one of its manufacturing partner’s beverage production sites in Sri Lanka. The goal of partnering with our team was to identify emission hotspots, improve data collection practices, and develop a replicable methodology for future assessments across other manufacturing sites.
Our Approach
RESET Carbon deployed a multi-phase approach to support the company’s decarbonization goals:
- Onsite Energy Audit: Conducted a detailed walkthrough at the beverage manufacturing factory in Sri Lanka , focusing on energy-intensive processes such as steam generation, chilled water systems, and electricity use.
- Carbon Footprint Assessment and Hotspot Analysis: Developed a gate-to-gate and bottom-up carbon footprint model using primary data, identifying that most emissions were attributed to energy use in processing machines.
- Methodology Development: Created a modular framework for energy and water modeling (e.g. process machines modules and supporting systems modules) that was designed for scalability and future replication.
Key Outcomes at a Glance
- Carbon Intensity Benchmark: Estimated the carbon and water intensity per liter of beverage production.
- Process-Level Insights: Identified process machines as the dominant emission source, guiding future efficiency investments.
- Data-Driven Strategy: Provided clarity that electricity efficiency and renewable energy should be prioritized for energy and carbon reduction moving forward.
- Scalable Framework: Delivered a replicable methodology that could be applied across the company’s similar suppliers.
Result
Vita Coco now has a robust understanding of its manufacturing emissions and a clear approach to data improvement. This has given them the confidence to efficiently identify which suppliers to address for emission reduction opportunities moving forward.
