CBAM: Diving into Supply Chain Data in China

The CBAM is a pivotal environmental policy under the EU Green Deal. It aims to equalize the carbon price paid for products manufactured in EU countries and those produced by global competitors. By targeting carbon intensive goods, CBAM sends a strong signal to global manufacturers to decarbonize their operations.

In our recent webinar, hosted in collaboration with Dubrink, we explored the intricacies of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its implications for supply chains in China. The session was led by Sam Nunn, Principal Consultant at RESET Carbon, and Marcel Duits, Chief CBAM Officer at Dubrink. Here are some of the key insights shared during the event.

Key Takeaways from the Webinar Discussion

Effective Data Collection

One of the primary challenges discussed was the complexity of collecting high-quality data from suppliers. Our work with Chinese suppliers has highlighted several obstacles, including low knowledge of production processes and limited record-keeping capabilities. As a result, a strategic approach to data collection is required, focusing on top suppliers and obtaining high-quality onsite data to tackle the majority of emissions.

Strategic Approach to Supplier Engagement

We shared our methodology for segmenting suppliers and focusing on strategic product groups to streamline data collection and reporting. By identifying the most critical suppliers and providing them with training and support, we can ensure higher transparency and optimize CBAM costs through supplier selection and decarbonization initiatives.

The Omnibus Package

The EU’s omnibus package has caused a lot of concern for companies wondering if the slimmed-down reporting requirements make their previous work on data collection and supply chain transparency a waste.  Although omnibus does simplify requirements in some ways, for most companies importing products from China, there is no change at all. High quality supplier data is going to be just as important, and so we still recommend taking a strategic approach and start data collection now to ensure that everything is ready by the time we enter the active period in 2027.

Real-World Applications

During the webinar, we presented a case study of our approach with a German retailer. By segmenting suppliers and focusing on strategic product groups, we were able to streamline the data collection process and ensure compliance with CBAM reporting requirements. This approach not only simplifies the engagement process but also provides valuable insights into the carbon footprint of the supply chain.
